VHP to demand for ban on loudspeakers in masjids Bans on loudspeakers in masjids and beauty pageants having indecent exposure of women, a law for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, and using donations at temples for welfare of Hindus, these are some of the demands of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Flexing its muscles after BJPs victory at the Centre and in Maharashtra, VHP has organised a Virat Hindu sammelan in Mumbai, where it will put forth these demands. Founded at Sandipani Ashram in Mumbai in August 1964, VHP is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. It has organised the sammelan at the Bandra-Kurla Complex, which will be attended by VHP leaders Ashok Singhal, Dr Pravin Togadiya, RSS joint secretary Dattatreya Hosbale, Hindutva rabble-rouser and Lok Sabha MP Yogi Adityanath and various Jain, Buddhist and Hindu religious figures. The sammelan will also create public awareness regarding love jihad, coastal security and endowments for schools imparting education in the Vedas. VHP central secretary Prof Venkatesh Abdeo said the organisation was planning to protest against events which denigrated women and added that it wanted beauty pageants banned. “Women are the matrushakti, their honour must be restored,” said Abdeo, adding that they were were pushing for a concept of “Hindu Family — Happy Family”. He said VHP believed that 99% women were against such “misuse” of the female body. “The government sides with people who go to court during Hindu festivals on ground of noise pollution. However, the loudspeakers which are put on masjids all through the year cause noise pollution and trouble to people,” Abdeo added, while pointing to HC questioning the state on action taken against illegal loudspeakers put up in places of worship. He called for these loudspeakers to be removed to curb noise pollution and blamed “lack of will power” for action not being taken. Abdeo also demanded a nationwide law to stop cow slaughter. “The society has respect for cows, and yet they are killed,” he said. He congratulated chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for writing to president Pranab Mukherjee to press for the states long- pending law against killing the bovines. Abdeo also sought construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya and pointed to how Hashim Ansari, 94, the oldest litigant in the Ayodhya shrine dispute had said he did not want to pursue the matter further and was seeking peaceful negotiations in the issue. Four major temples in Maharashtra (Shirdi, Siddhivinayak, Tuljapur and Pandharpur) are controlled by the state government, and Abdeo demanded that as the donations to these temples come from Hindu society, these endowments be used for social, culture and religious welfare of Hindu society alone and the management of these temples be handed over to Hindu trusts. BOX Hindu culture is 1,96,08,113 years old VHP central secretary Prof Venkatesh Abdeo said Muslims in India were originally Hindus and had been converted to Islam. He added that the history of Islam dated to just over 1,400 years ago, while Hindu culture was 1,96,08,113 years old.
