More than 850 political prisoners in Iran have been executed over the last 8 months. Thousands more remain in prisons subject to horrific torture and insidious persecution. The very brave Kurdish political prisoners in the prison of Urmia (also spelled Orumiyeh) in Iranian Kurdistan have been on a hunger strike for the past 19 days,to bring attention to the Khameini regimes tyranny, brutality and injustice. For the past 19 days, Kurdish political prisoners in the prison of Urmia (also spelled Orumiyeh) in Iranian Kurdistan have been on hunger strike to bring attention to the Khameini regimes tyranny, brutality and injustice. They demand that the Iranian regime changes its policy of deliberately mixing criminals with political prisoners. Aside from systematic torture and other forms cruel and inhumane treatment of political prisoners, the Islamic Republic of Iran pursues a policy of deliberately mixing dangerous criminals with Kurdish political prisoners. Being forced to share prison cells with criminals is greatly humiliating for individuals who have struggled for Kurdish national rights, liberty and democracy. Routinely, the criminal inmates verbally and physically attack Kurdish political prisoners. Analysts believe that the criminals are encouraged to engage in these actions by the Iranian authorities. The aim is to inflict psychological harm on the Kurdish prisoners in an effort to break their determination in resisting the Islamic Republic of Iran. In spite of years of torture, the majority of Kurdish political prisoners do not reveal sensitive information on the underground organizations and individuals that are organizing the Kurdish resistance against the occupation of Kurdistan by the Islamic Republic and its oppression of the Kurdish people. Having realized that torture in most cases fails to achieve the goals of the Islamic Republic in Kurdistan, Iranian prison authorities also make narcotics available to the political prisoners. The aim, according to former political prisoners, is to facilitate a situation where the prisoners become addicts, thus amenable to control. Another aim is to turn political prisoners into addicts and later release them to demoralize their families and communities. It is against these conditions that Kurdish political prisoners in the prison of Urmia have embarked on hunger strike during the past 19 days. A number of Kurdish political parties, among them PDKI, will organize demonstrations in front of Iranian embassies in Western countries. The aim is to show solidarity with the brave political prisoners, as well as to raise international awareness regarding the inhumane, ominous and insidious methods of the Islamic Republic of Iran against Kurdish activists and political prisoners.
