#VIC #Bushfire #Community #Message #Corp ~~Gippsland fires update~~Posted by CFA Media Sun 2 Feb 2014 Location:District 11 Issued by Gippsland Regional Control Centre Fire Danger is expected to rise across Gippsland tomorrow with very strong winds and high temperatures bringing a Total Fire Ban throughout the Region. 11 fires are still listed as “going” in parts of East Gippsland including Club Terrace, Goongerah, Gelantipy and Danes Track north of Bairnsdale. Fire agencies are most concerned about the Goongerah – Mt Jersey fire to the north of the Goongerah Township and the 3 fires in the Snowy River National Park to the west of Bonang. A recommendation to evacuate was issued at 5:30pm this afternoon (Sunday 2 February) for Goongerah. Victoria Police, SES and fire crews will be door knocking and recommending that residents evacuate the area. A relief centre has been established at the Orbost Secondary College. Regional Fire Controller, Anthony Costigan said “winds are predicted to strengthen from the North West during this evening and a south westerly wind change is expected later tomorrow. These winds will be stronger at higher elevations and will be the major driver of fire behaviour”. Extra resources from Gippsland and further afield have been moved into the area to ensure that communities are well protected. “While we will have extra resources in and around townships, I strongly urge residents who do not need to be at home tomorrow to consider leaving early” he said. With large and dangerous bushfires close to communities, it is highly likely that major roads will be closed to traffic. “Residents should factor the potential road closures into their fire plans. Leaving at the last minute may not be an option” he said. The Bonang Road was closed to traffic between Orbost and Bonang at 6.00pm this evening. This closure will not prevent residents leaving the area. People who are visiting parks or forests in East Gippsland should check to see if a Public Safety Zone has been implemented in the area they intend to visit. Check the DEPI website depi.vic.gov.au/forestry-and-land-use/forestry-management/public-safety-zones. A Public Safety Zone means that the particular area of public land is closed to all visitors.
