VICTORY!!! ETHNIC STUDIES PASSES 6-1 in LAUSD SCHOOL BOARD TONIGHT!!!! This was a great gathering, a thousand, mostly youth, some came on busses, some marched, were charged and loud and determined... as Aztec danzantes hit the beat, they marched tirelessly around the LAUSD building, 100 inside wearing red, we carried the beautiful Raza Studies Now banner proudly (made by PYFC youth and Raul Gonzalez), Natalia chanted briefly if they dont pass it, stop the traffic! ... Jose del Barrio Sean Abajian, Ron Gochez and many others did an amazing job organizing, MEChA college and high school groups present, many high schools, Alex Aldana from PYFC, CSULA prof. Melina Abdullah ended her talk inside with ... this is California not Arizona, PASS THE RESOLUTION!, Oscar de la Torre spoke last, referenced Save Ethnic Studies in Arizona (Sean Arce) the MAS programs precedent/success, Kitaro Webbs model class at Samohi, (cued by Marcos Aguilars comment) recommended FUNDING Ethnic Studies, which board member Monica Garcia followed up on... outside Black and Brown youth chanted If my hoodie and color of my skin is probable cause, We need ETHNIC STUDIES not racist laws, with Black and Brown bodies under attack, we gotta fight, fight, fight, FIGHT BACK! ... I ran into numerous amazing Raza/Ethnic Studies teachers (who will be our models) Ron Espiritu (who just did a Ted talk on Ethnic Studies in high schools at Amherst), Martha Metzli Guerrero, Johnny Carlos Ramirez, Ruben (Wilson), Erika and Jorge (Roosevelt), and many others whove been planting seeds for years... when we heard it passed we exploded into cheers, then SI SE PUDO...!!!! News vans/cameras were there rolling, but didnt air it on late news. No matter, cuz WE MADE HISTORY. It felt like winning the CIF State Championship! But we know inside it was MORE!!! ... Now we await the January 12 Federal Court ruling on Arizonas Raza Studies, and here in LA we will continue, perhaps more inspired than before, to BUILD! A great day to be a Xicano! A great day for Native American, Xican@, African American, Asian American, LGBT Studies, Womens Studies, Ethnic Studies! Power to the Students! All Power to the People!!! Ethnic Studies Now!
