VIDEO 4 of 4: During the most recent community meeting held in Likely, residents and concerned parties were given the opportunity to ask questions of Mount Polley officials, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Environment. Jacinda Mack, the Mining Coordinator on behalf of the Soda Creek Indian Band and the Williams Lake Indian Band asked if there were any plans for any chemical treatment for purifying the water, and when that decision would be made. “Regarding the tailings clean-up plan, am I correct in that this plan is not due until July 2015 – for the actual plan in Phase II? “ “In the presentation, it said that the Ministry of Environment is responsible for the clean-up of the tailings. So, there will be clean-up of the tailings? Everything won’t just be left the way they are? Based on the answers given to Jacinda, she said, “I guess my concern is that there will be no plan, potentially until July 2015, which means there will be no clean-up until after that – if there is any clean-up at all. “And, will that include Quesnel Lake, all of the tailings that are in Quesnel Lake, because if those were gold pieces, you can bet your bottom dollar every single piece would be pulled out of that lake. “The technology exists. The bottom line of whether it’s feasible seems to come down to whether it’s financially viable for the company, and I don’t think we’re going big enough in questioning Mount Polley, but Imperial Metals has much deeper pockets. I think, as the regulatory agencies, this accountability needs to be maintained. “Those are the questions all the time, “When are the tailings going to be cleaned up.” And, I don’t think it’s acceptable for people to hear, “Yeah, we’re just going to leave them and we’re just going to, like, reconstruct over them.” The officials responses can be heard by playing this video.
