VIDEO OF THE DAY: Drum Boogie by Gene Krupa And His Orchestra Legendary drummer and Chicago native Gene Krupa would have been 106 years old today. To commemorate Genes birthday, heres a video that beautifully shows the dynamic energy and wonderful musicianship that this charismatic and talented drummer possessed. This clip is from the 1941 film Ball of Fire starring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper and directed by Howard Hawks. Gene composed the song Drum Boogie with trumpeter Roy Eldridge. The voice dubbed over Stanwyck is that of Martha Tilton. When watching the clip, its easy to see why Gene is considered one of drummings first superstars. Gene brought the drums to the forefront and elevated the status of our instrument. Watch til the end for a special version of the song - Match Boogie!
