___________ During last year, VIER PFOTEN played a big role in its effort to convince the local and central authorities in Romania that the mass killing of the stray dogs is not the solution. Besides the lobby activities and the adoption campaigns at national level, our Stray Animal Care teams started ambitious neutering campaigns in rural areas, as an example on how put a stop to the abandonements – one of the biggest sources of the strays problem. As the new legislation stipulates high fines for those owners that didn’t neutered and registered their common breed dogs, there is a big concern that the number of the abandonements will dramatically surge. The first VIER PFOTEN project focused on this matter started in May 2014, in Jichisu de Jos, a rural municipality near city of Dej (Northern Romania). In short time, our vets assisted by mobile clinics set an unprecedented success: Jichisu de Jos became the first municipality in Romania with all dogs (with owners or strays) being neutered. It was a good practices example of an efficient cooperation with the local authorities (the city hall, the police, the local veterinarian) and the local activists, from Anima Pro Terra NGO. The neutering project rapidly expanded to other rural municipalities around Dej – Catcau, Mica, Jichisu de Sus and Cuzdrioara – where the mayors understood the importance of such a long term solution. In total, our vets neutered 3.142 animals (including a small number of cats) in Dej area. At the end of January, our team will start a new project in the city of Dej. Other projects will follow in the villages around the city. Another big project started at the end of September, in the small cities and villages around Bucharest, having the full support of the National Veterinarian Authority and the National Veterinarian College. The first neutering clinic was installed in the city of Pantelimon, near Bucharest, being launched in the presence of Alena Gerber, a famous German model and TV presenter. Over 700 dogs and cats were neutered in this area till winter, and the project will be relaunched as soon as the weather will allow it. Starting this spring, the project will expand to others municipalities around Bucharest, as Branesti, Damaroaia, Buftea etc.
