VIETNAM VETERANS ON CAPITOL HILL Hi everybody….did you know that the current session of Congress has the fewest number of veterans since before WWII? It’s a fact, and 4 are Vietnam Veterans who might really despise Hanoi Jane. Perhaps Congress will be in recess on August 16th, and they might join us briefly on the picket lines. You could send them an email invitation, but only if you live there – the Capitol Hill system requires a zip code, and if you’re not in that district, the email will be rejected automatically. Before you send an invitation, enter the zip code of the local office, listed below, on the home page of fandango dot com, and perhaps the will be a multi-screen theater just blocks from their office! That’s where to invite him. If he can’t make it in person, perhaps he’ll send a staff member to show his support for the Boycott, or make a speech on C-SPAN endorsing our efforts. And PLEASE, if you live in the district, send an invitation, and get a response, post it on this page, OK? Thanks. The most prominent of these 4 veterans is Arizona’s Sen. John McCain. Last March, he wrote an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal on the 40th anniversary of his release from the Hanoi Hilton. In it, he expressed the desire to accept the past and move on with the Vietnamese people. Previously, he has stated the same theme, but said he can never forgive those prison guards who took pleasure in administering torture. So, people in Arizona who are deeply offended by HJ pretending to be Mrs. Reagan have good reason to ask Sen. McCain how he feels about this film. Furthermore, when first elected to the House in 1982, John McCain was a huge supporter of President Reagan, so he may also be personally offended by this casting decision. Don’t forget, Hanoi Jane has never apologized for calling POWs “hypocrites and liars”. His field offices are located in Phoenix (85016), Tucson (85701), and Prescott (86301). Second on this short list is Rep. Sam Johnson from the 3rd District of Texas. A POW for 7 years, he was part of the “Alcatraz Gang”, a hard-core resister held in solitary for 42 months and tortured. He won his first full term in 1992 and has been reelected nine times. You might have seen him recently on national TV news when the IRS official, Ms. Lerner, took the 5th in front of the House investigating committee. The 3rd District includes most of Collin County, and the field office is located in Plano (75075). Representing the 11th District of New Jersey since 1994 is Rep. Rodney Frelinghyusen. A member of a prominent NJ political family, he served as a Spec. 5 with the 93rd Engineer Battalion in the Mekong Delta. The 11th New Jersey is a suburban, Republican-leaning district centered in Morris County, and the field office is located in Morristown (07960). New to Capitol Hill is Rep. Kerry Bentivolio from Michigan’s 11th District. Not only did he serve as an infantryman in Vietnam in 1971, but also deployed to Iraq in 2007, and is a retired Sargent First Class from the Army National Guard. He was endorsed by the Tea Party Express and is a strong advocate of 2nd Amendment Rights. The 11th District covers NW Wayne County and SW Oakland County, with a field office in Commerce (48390). Again, if you hear anything back from these gentlemen, please post the response. Coming soon: Iraq & Afghanistan Vets in Congress.
