VINELAND — The lunch versus elective decision facing many - TopicsExpress

VINELAND — The lunch versus elective decision facing many Vineland High School students will be the focus of a community meeting called by school board president Eugene Medio. Medio is hosting the gathering, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the VHS 11-12 auditorium, to gather public input on his suggestion that all VHS students be required to have a daily lunch period. Last month, Medio asked that the school board add a discussion about daily lunch periods to its work session agenda. He later postponed that board discussion to give him additional time to gather front-line feedback. Many VHS students balked at the idea. There are now 310 students at VHS who do not take a lunch period, according to district administrators. Most skip the trip to the cafeteria in order to shoehorn another class, such as an arts elective, into their daily schedule. Parents must grant their permission before a student is allowed to forgo a lunch period. Initially, Medio said, he planned to meet with the VHS principals and students. He has now opted to host the community meeting to allow all those interested to participate.
