VIRGINIA: Richmond HIV Rate Among Highest in Nation Thu, 16 Jan 2014 - nbc12 NBC12 reported new statistics released by the Virginia Department of Health demonstrate that, with 2,300 HIV-positive individuals living in Richmond, the city has one of the highest rates of the disease in the country. Data also show that the city reports more than 70 new cases each year, with African Americans representing more than 80 percent of the overall cases. According to Dr. Jim May of the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, reasons for the city’s high numbers may include its high rate of poverty. In addition, since the disease is not the death sentence that it once was, many may engage in riskier behavior without realizing the consequences.
