VISIONLESS VOW “Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.” (Ecclesiastes 5:5) A vow is a serious promise, which is expected to be fulfilled. Jephthah was both a Judge and mighty warrior in Israel. He led Israel in the war against the Ammonites. Before embarking on that battle, he made a vow to God to offer as a burnt offering, whatever he spotted first on his return home. God granted Jephthah victory over the Ammonites. On his return from the battle, Jephthah’s daughter, his only child, was the first to come out of his house to greet him. He fulfilled his pledge to God. This illustrates the seriousness of making a vow to God, and the need to avoid making light- hearted and irresponsible vow like Jephthah did. Do not make a hasty vow that you cannot redeem. Rather, learn to give willingly to God according to your means and as led by Him. Jephthah made a rather thoughtless vow and paid dearly for it. It is better not to make a vow, than to vow and not perform it. Challenge: Avoid making a carefree and hasty vow. Prayer:Help me Lord to give willingly unto you. Further Reading:Judges 11:30-40.
