VITAMINS FOR THE MIND by Ron Reynolds #3663 (Friday, October 17, 2014) Je Pense Donc Je Suis For those who speak French, you instantly know from the title of this message what I’m likely going to write this morning. For those who may speak Latin, the phrase ‘Cogito ergo sum’ means the same thing as the French quote I offered. Both phrases, when translated into English mean – “I think, therefore I am.” Make no mistake about it, the thoughts we think and the information stored in our three-pound brain – along with all the experiences we’ve had and the habits we’ve formed – have determined for us the quality of life that we now have. That quality cannot be improved upon in a short period of time; if you’re about thirty years old, you aren’t likely to have a sudden change or circumstances, although you may have a sudden appearance of an opportunity. Now, if you were to go to work in an attempt to make that opportunity work for you, it still won’t change your circumstances overnight, but if you remain diligent, if you remain constant in your efforts, and if you can find within yourself the ability to develop a passion for that opportunity, you can take the first steps in putting the past behind you as you move toward a remarkably better future. But “as a man thinketh, so he becomes,” and as he continues to think, so he remains; as I stated in a mental vitamin a few days ago, ‘if nothing changes, then surely nothing changes. It’s our thinking that must change first; merely taking some action directed at making progress, by itself, won’t work. It’s not just ‘what we do’ that turns things around, it’s how we feel about what we do – it’s the zeal we bring to the endeavor, it’s the passion we have for what we do and for how we do it, and it’s the commitment we make toward ‘doing it until it’s done’ that brings about the desired result. In short, then, - ‘Je pense, donc je suis’, - “I think, therefore I am.” I realize that this may sound rather nebulous – like some ‘new age’ philosophy – but it isn’t. I learned many years ago that when we change for the better, then circumstances change for the better, and for me, there’s simply no resemblance to my life and lifestyle today compared to what it was before I made the decision to enter upon a new path – one in which I accepted full responsibility for how my life would turn out. If your current plan for improving your circumstances is based upon working for someone else, then you’ve chosen to surrender the quality of your life to that ‘someone,’ and whoever that is will not be acting in your best interests. Find the opportunity that is missing from your life plan, and then work on that opportunity while you work on yourself; then, as you think differently you will act differently, and that changes everything. Cogito ergo sum! The views expressed on this post are those of Ron Reynolds and do not necessarily reflect the views of AdvoCare.
