VITO ANTUOFERMO TO ATTEND HALL OF FAME WEEKEND CANASTOTA, NY - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today former middleweight champion of the world Vito Antuofermo will attend festivities planned for the 25th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend June 5-8th. “Vito Antuofermo was a rugged middleweight champion who provided fans with many thrilling moments during his championship career,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame is excited to welcome him to Canastota to participate in 25th anniversary activities.” Antuofermo, who was born in Italy, turned pro in 1971. He won the European light middleweight title from Eckhard Dagge (W 15) and scored wins over Denny Moyer (W 10), Bennie Briscoe (W 10) and Emile Griffith (W 10) before defeating Hugo Corro (W 15) for the world middleweight championship in June 1979. He drew with Marvelous Marvin Hagler in his first defense. After losing the title to Alan Minter (L 15), he would challenge for the world championship twice more, dropping rematches to Minter (1980) and Hagler (1981). Since retiring from the ring in 1985 with a 50-7-2 (21 KOs) record, Antuofermo has turned to acting, appearing in Goodfellas, The Godfather III and The Sopranos. Events planned for the weekend include a banquet, a Night of Puerto Rican Pride, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2014. Inductees include two division champion “The Pride of Wales” Joe Calzaghe, six division world champion “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, three division champion Felix “Tito” Trinidad, promoter Barry Hearn, referee Richard Steele, journalist Graham Houston and photographer Neil Leifer. Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer, Pioneer and Non-Participant categories will also be honored. An impressive list of over 40 boxing greats from the United States and abroad, including “Irish” Micky Ward, Erik Morales, George Chuvalo, John John Molina, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Ruben Olivares and Pipino Cuevas, are scheduled to participate in the weekend.
