VO PM Thongsing Thammavong says Teachers and must continuously develop themselves to accomplishing the mission of the nation INTRO: Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong said in speech to mark the 20th anniversary of National Teachers’ Day that, Teachers and lecturers must continuously develop themselves and pay more attention to accomplishing the mission of the nation STORY: The Premiere was speaking at the gathering where celerates Teacher’s Day at the National University of Laos and was attended by government and education officials, various ambassadors to Laos, representatives from NGOs, teachers and students. Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong stated that, to respond to the development needs of the Party and government as well as the nation, teachers must educate themselves to become true teachers of the Party, regularly upgrade their knowledge and skills, and become admirable and reliable teachers and lecturers for the Lao people. He said, all teachers and lecturers should actively contribute to achieving the commitments of the National Education System Reform Strategy and collaborate with central and local education authorities to develop grassroots education in focal development areas of each district, especially in rural, remote and mountainous areas According to the Premiere, the Party and government have paid special attention to the development of Lao education, which has resulted in more investment in education to systematically develop basic education infrastructure. He noted that the purposes of educational reforms were to improve the quality of education in line with the increasing numbers of students and teachers. One major goal is to meet set national economic development goals and integrate with the tendency towards global and regional education development. The PM also urged the relevant social agencies, both public and private, and inside and outside the country, as well as all Lao people to consider education as the foremost commitment for national development. It is highlighted that, the Ministry of Education and Sports needs to undertake education reforms comprehensively, especially in teacher training, to ensure a gradual increase in standards, and pay more attention to full and regular training in political ideology for teachers and lecturers. The ministry should continue to expand education opportunities in remote and isolated areas to eliminate illiteracy and contribute to poverty eradication efforts. Presently, many teachers and lecturers have received academic titles in specialised fields such as professor, associate professor, specialist teachers, skilled teachers and experienced teachers, which gradually endorse the status of teachers and lecturers in the country and in the international forum. There are approximately 80,000 teachers nationwide, including administrators, but they still did not meet the needs of schools as the number of students is increasing continuously
