VOB trail runs this weekend: SATURDAY 20 JULY 2013 LONGER FASTER GROUP: For those doing the race (or the just the 3rd Leg) and don’t know the route, here is an opportunity to check it out. I will take runners to a point where they can see the entire rest of the route (so that you can complete it on your own) and then I am going to head off to Chapman’s Peak along the contour path and back along the road (4km of tar) to the beach. LEG 3 OF HOUT BAY TRAIL CHALLENGE (SHORT, SWEET AND FAST AS YOU LIKE) – WITH LONGER OPTION After a pretty tough one last weekend we are going to do a nice easy one this coming weekend with a few options for everyone. Net downhill with a few speed bumps along the way. Run Leader: Tim Bellairs 0823210299 / tim.bellairs@gmail Start Time and Place: There is car admin involved. Again, you are responsible for your own lift arrangements but we will do our very best to facilitate lifts. We would encourage as many people as possible to meet at Hout Bay Harbour (inside the harbour) at between 06h50 and 07h00 to drop cars. Then we will climb into as few cars as possible (volunteers required) and head up to Constantia Nek to start at 07h30. How to find the right place in the harbour: Coming from Constantia Nek (down the M63 Constantia / Hout Bay Main Road) go straight over the first traffic circle and proceed to the second traffic circle where you turn right into Princess Beach Road. At the next circle turn left into Hout Bay Harbour Road. Drive past Mariners Wharf and take the next little entrance left into the harbour itself. Park on the left just inside the gates. Coming from Atlantic Seaboard, come straight through on Victoria Drive (M6 south) over Suikerbossie and straight down through the Hout Bay centre and into Hout Bay Harbour Road and proceed as above. Route: The official route of the morning will be Leg 3 of the HBTC which is quite short. I am going to add an extra little loop of 7 or 8km just to punish my legs for being bad but those wanting to do just the official route will be set on the right path. So once we have gone up over the Vlakkenberg Nek and on up to the tar road we tack the single track down past Mangenese Mines. This is a superb piece of single track that you can motor down but watch your footing carefully as it is a little technical. Once we have started the final steeper descent to the Blackburn Ravine path I am going to pause just long enough to send the purists along the proper route to the finish (about 3km) and then I am going to take the higher traverse around into Blackburn Ravine. From there it will be down Blackburn and out the other side on the scenic traverse over to the foot of Chapman’s Peak. From there I will drop down onto the road and do about 4km of tar back to the beach and across to the harbour. Distance: Official Leg 3 Route is about 11.5km. The alternative route will be just shy of 20km. Running Time: Leg 3 about 1h45 – 2hours. Alternative 3.5 hours. Difficulty: Leg 3 is the tough side of easy. Alternative is medium. Important Notes · Once again, there is some car admin involved. Please note the details in “Start Time and Place” above. · Remember to wear proper, winter trail running gear which is appropriate to the weather conditions on the day. · Carry sufficient water and nutrition to last the whole run. · The group naturally splits into pace groups; at least two but sometimes more. If you fall off a group and don’t know the way then stop and wait for the next group. Do not try and guess. · Please carry a charged cell phone with the run leader’s number stored on it (see above) and a whistle. · If you are worried about E coli and other goggas in the Disa River crossing on the beach within the last km of the run then you are welcome to go around on Princess Beach Road (tar) but expect to get abuse from fellow runners. · There is a small charge to get into the Hout Bay Harbour but the gate keepers are seldom there at that time of day. Take a few rand with you anyway, just in case, and / or to tip the car guards. · Please be aware that trail running and related activities are inherently riskier and more dangerous than road running. You are participating in these runs voluntarily and whilst acsis VOB and the leaders of the runs take all reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it can never be fully guaranteed. To this end, acsis VOB and the run leaders personally cannot be held liable for claims relating to injuries, disabilities and deaths, inter alia, that may occur during these events. You are participating entirely at your own risk.
