VODUN AND THE GREATEST LOVE One of the greatest loves that the world witnesses, by far, is the love between a parent and a child. Mothers will do just about anything to protect or provide for their young. Fathers have been known, in the presence of danger, to shield their young or loved ones with their very lives; willing to die, themselves, rather than their children. Some folks, those who are parents of those of bad repute, murderers, pedophiles, and the like, where only their mothers could possibly find compassion for them, will go to their graves claiming my child didnt do it! Such is the deep love and affection between a child and a parent. I remember my uncle Smitty, who served in World War II, jokingly delivering his favorite line to me, I love pretty women and pretty horses! as I would watch him leave medical journals all around the house in an attempt to encourage my cousin to attend medical school. This man whom, himself, had dreamed of being a doctor was a humble janitor but desired better for his son. So, when my cousin became a prominent surgeon, in Columbus Ohio, and landed himself in the Whos Who of African America Men my uncle began to carry a continuous beam upon his face. But even further, I remember the unspeakable pain that gripped me at the death of my beloved adopted daughter, Constance Hounnon, from sickle cell anemia at the age of 3 and half years old in Benin, West Africa. Her biological mother had died in childbirth. The granddaughter of the Supreme Chief of Vodun, himself, I thought my life had ended. It took me over 2 years before I could say her name without breaking down with the voduns complaining that I had turned my face from them in my unbearable sorrow. But, through it all, I crawled and clawed myself back up into an upright position, again, understanding that this precious one was someone I loved just as much in death as I did in life with our relationship becoming stronger with each passing day of my existence. So, multiply this type of deep affection by one million times and you would just began to fathom just how much the spirits, that gave us life, truly love us. While it is true that we come to this earth with a specific mission or destiny there is an undeniable relationship of love and affection that develops between us and the spirits that live within us. For even before we become aware of them they proceed to protect and guide us. While we are attributing our lifes accomplishments to others they are quietly working for us. When we are seeing lifes troubles our ancestors are interceding and pleading for us that the divine ones do something to make it better. They run away the bad influences and those that wish to harm or make our lives difficult. They work to bring us the good fortunes, the good business leads, the good relationships, the good karma, the good vibes and the good life. And when things are most dire or they choose for us to know them, personally, they put us on a journey to discover them. But many times we never know them. Many times, in fact most of the time, mankind is not even aware they are there. This is the work of the divine, the work of the spirits that live within us...the work of unimaginable love...the work of the Creator(s) and that which they have created... a relationship between a child and their parent(s). The thought of it often overwhelms me. I am so honored to be a spokesperson for them, so honored to serve and be of service to the divine. AMEN
