VOL 9 No 109 RNI No: SIKENG/2006/18384 GANGTOK, TUESDAY 30 DECEMBER 2014 himalayanmirror.netfacebook/himalayan.mirror Teachers demand transfer rollback, threaten stir Gangtok, Dec 29: The Sikkim Teachers Association today strongly denounced the state governments move of mass transfer of 1063 school teachers. A memorandum demanding the roll back of the transfer order was also submitted by a group of around 400 teachers under the aegis of STA to the Chief Minister, HRD Minister and Secretary demanding roll back of the decision. Later, the STA members held a press conference and came down heavily on the government’s inability to formulate a teacher’s transfer policy. They have also threatened to go to any extent in the form of protest if the government fails to take back its transfer orders and form a transfer policy for teachers. Speaking during the conference President of STA, Lazong Butia said that the association has been demanding for the formulation of Teachers Transfers policy since a long time but rued over the governments reluctance to do so. He added that the STA is not averse to the transfer of teachers but will only accept a proper transfer decision taken under a standard set policy. Bhanu Pradhan, Publicity secretary, informed that the government has passed guidelines in 2009 and 2013 which mentions that teachers working in a particular school for more than 5 years shall be transferred and while husband and wife will be transferred to nearby places, people above 50 years will not be transferred. He said that the government overlooked its own guidelines and transferred 146 teachers in 2012 and 401 in 2014. The members alleged that it has become a norm form the government to initiate transfers soon after the elections and said that such whims and fancies of the government is not only causing harassment to the teachers but also hampering the status of education in the state. The association further informed that its members are slated to meet the CM and HRDD Minister on Jan 8. If the meeting fails and demands not met, the association will serve an ultimatum to the government over the issue, they informed.
