RAJYAVARDHAN RATHORE: BJP candidate from Jaipur Rural (Rajasthan) On Tuesday, 17th August 2004, a 34 year old army major shot a score of 44 in the final round of the double trap shooting event at Atlanta. Together with his 135 in the qualifying rounds, the score of 179/200 was enough to make him only the second Indian (and possibly the first) to win an individual Olympics silver medal. Awarded the Arjuna award in 2003-04 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri in 2004-05, Rajyavardhan Rathore has been one of Indias finest sportspersons. Born in an army family, Rajyavardhan followed in the footsteps of his father and joined the Indian army. He was awarded the Blazer (best sportsperson) at NDA and the Golden Sword (best all round cadet) and Sikh regiment Gold Medal (best sportsperson) at IMA. He has consistently won laurels for India winning gold medals in the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and World Shooting Championships in 2004 and 2006. But the silver at Atlanta Olympics remains his best performance. He retired as a Colonel in 2013. Besides shooting for medals, he has played an important role in Indias security matters. He was part of the Army’s counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir and his unit was responsible for terminating more than 300 terrorists. He was the first army officer below the rank of brigadier to be awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).
