VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 1 Vote NO on Amendment 1 to protect Missouris laws against puppy mills! Mislabeled as Right to Farm, this proposed constitutional amendment is not about the right to farm; such a right currently exists. Rather, this legislation will provide unscrupulous dog breeders and other animal exploiters with additional legal grounds to challenge our animal welfare laws in a court of law. This newly created constitutional right will no doubt result in the filing of frivolous lawsuits in an attempt to overturn state and local laws regulating animal care. Animal exploiters, including puppy mills, will have no qualms in arguing that this now gives them the right to raise animals as they see fit. A lengthy lawsuit against our current puppy mill law dragged on for almost a year before it was finally dismissed. If this legislation was simply about farming, and not about weakening our laws protecting dogs, why did the Missouri House overwhelmingly reject an amendment to specifically exclude dogs and cats from this measure? When questioned on the floor of the Senate as to what the Right to Farm initiative will actually do, the sponsor of Amendment 1 responded, the courts will have to decide that. Unfortunately, Amendment 1 will call into question the validity of all of our laws protecting animals and will lead to non-compliance with such laws and, as a consequence, animals being abused and neglected. We are particularly concerned that large corporate farms will bring lawsuits against small rural counties in an attempt to overturn local health and animal welfare regulations on factory farms. Every year there are attempts in the Legislature to eliminate these local ordinances and to allow the growth of factory farms in Missouri. Many of these rural communities lack the legal resources and funds to thwart any lawsuits resulting from Amendment 1 and the placing of Right to Farm in the state constitution. Please spread the word about Amendment 1 to your friends, neighbors and relatives. Let them know that Amendment 1 is not about the Right to Farm but rather an attempt to weaken laws protecting animals in the state. Please ask them to go to the polls next Tuesday, August 5, and Vote No on Amendment 1.
