VOTING FOR MCDOWELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. I agree with what Gwen - TopicsExpress

VOTING FOR MCDOWELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. I agree with what Gwen wrote, below. If we want improvement in animal welfare in McDowell County we need to VOTE OUT: David Walker Randy Hollifield Barry McPeters VOTE IN: Dean Henline Michelle Harris Matthew Crawford From Gwen: I had a letter to the editor in the McDowell News on the election. For dogs and cats the best outcome would be that David Walker does not get re-elected. He was the only commissioner to vote no on sending the dog tethering issue to the planning board to see if we need specific standards of care. And after the questionable planning board vote, he and Randy Hollifield and Barry McPeters refused to put it on the commission agenda when Michael Lavender moved to do so. If we could get three new faces on the commission, they would make a majority to outvote Hollifield and McPeters. Lavender and Kaylor are dropping off the commission. Dean Henline, Matthew Crawford and Michelle Harris were the first Marilyn Foreman invited to be interviewed by animal advocates. We were favorably impressed by the willingness of all three to take action on animal abuse. Even Tony Brown when he was questioned at the parish house said he could support a mandatory S/N ordinance with the option to buy a permit to keep a fertile animal. But he also said tethering is necessary to train a hunting dog, which we know is not so. Gary Loudermilk had some intelligent things to say in the paper about the county failing to address people’s concerns – he said the animal people were rudely treated by the commissioners. I think all five are likely independent thinkers. Virginia Williams did not respond to the newspaper’s questions on several issues, including dog tethering. When she was interviewed at the parish house, she said animal issues should be addressed at the state level. When I told her at the community building forum that the state can’t even pass a puppy mill bill, she wasn’t aware of that. The bottom line is - our pro animal majority depends on David Walker not being re-elected. That’s probably unlikely if only because of name recognition. At least all of us can cast our votes for three others!
