VP Embarks on Social Mobilization Tour By Alimatu Fofanah Vice President… on tour of three chiefdoms in Kono District Vice President, Alhaji Chief Sidique Sam-Sumana last week Friday, 23rd January 2015 embarked on a district-wide Social Mobilization tour in three chiefdoms, namely, Mafindor, Gbaneh Kandor and Sao along the Guinea- Sierra Leone border in Kono District, SLENA reports. Addressing people in the various chiefdoms, the Vice President said that his visit was a continuation of His Excellency, Dr. Earnest Bai Koromas nationwide social mobilization drive for community involvement and ownership of the fight against the Ebola virus. He encouraged paramount chiefs, traditional and religious leaders and cultural society heads, MPs, Councilors and other stakeholders in the various chiefdoms to redouble their efforts and be more vigilant to break the chain of transmission of the dreaded disease. He said His Excellency, President Koroma is also on a nationwide tour to ensure that the disease is eradicated in the country, calling on the people to cooperate with their authorities and uphold the rules and regulations slated by the chiefdom authorities in order for His Excellency, the government and international partners to achieve their goal in the fight against the disease. He thanked the Ebola Taskforces in the various chiefdoms for barricading all the border crossing points in their chiefdoms and stop visitors or doing businesses across the border. As a token of appreciation to the people in their fight against the disease, the Vice President presented the sum of Le30 million (Le30, 000,000) to the three chiefdoms’ Ebola Taskforces. He said he is proud and very happy about the stance taken by the people as His Excellency, government and partners in the fight were very worrisome about the emergence of new cases in the border areas. He maintained that as health supersedes all else, the people should continue the good work by tightening their surveillance teams, intensify Ebola education especially now that the river that serves as a boundary is less and people can easily crossed over. Speaking on behalf sick paramount chief Kongoba II of Mafindor Chiefdom, Mr. Sahr A. Suluku said that their chiefdom earlier received about Le17 million for the fight against Ebola which money was used to buy a motor bike and made available to the Chiefdom Taskforce for the purpose of surveillance and educating their people in the chiefdom. He proudly disclosed that their chiefdom has not recorded a single case of Ebola since the outbreak. He said when they heard of the outbreak, they swiftly closed the border crossing points to prevent cross border activities and are now on an everyday house-to-to check for sick people. Paramount Chief Bawah of Gbaneh Kandor, informed the Vice President that his chiefdom has 72 border crossing points which are very difficult to man but with the help of the youths, chiefs, women, Madam Finda Koroma and international partners, they were able to man them. Chiefdom Speaker of Sao chiefdom told the VP that his chiefdom had one imported case from Koidu which resulted in over 30 people being infected but they have put measures in place to stop the spread.
