VU UNIVERSITY AMSTERDAM - NRF SOUTH AFRICA DESMOND TUTU DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP CALL FOR APPLIICATIIONS FOR DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIIPS VU University Amsterdam recently installed four Desmond Tutu Programme Chairs in honour of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond M. Tutu. This Programme at VU University focuses on the theme Youth, Sports and Reconciliation and aims to strengthen the co-operation between VU University (in Amsterdam) and South African institutions. In support of the drive to increase the number of South African doctoral graduates, VU University Amsterdam and the National Research Foundation (NRF) have introduced the VU University Amsterdam – NRF Desmond Tutu Doctoral Programme. We invite potential South African students to apply for the doctoral scholarships. The format will be a sandwich programme in which students will: Register at VU University Amsterdam, with joint supervisors at the Amsterdam university and a South African higher education institution; Complete required coursework for doctoral studies both in South Africa and in the Netherlands; Spend up to two (2) months per year over a period of four (4) years at VU Amsterdam to undertake course and thesis related work; and Carry out their research activities in South Africa under the supervision of a South African based researcher. In the first round, the VU University Amsterdam based supervision is restricted to the Desmond Tutu Programme Chairs namely: Professor Chris Elbers (Faculty of Economics); Professor Stephen Ellis (Faculty of Social Sciences); Professor Geert Savelsbergh (Faculty of Human Movement Sciences); Professor Eddy Van der Borght (Faculty of Theology); and Professor Marceline van Furth (Faculty of Medicine) The biosketches of the chairs and information on their respective research programmes can be found on the following website: fsw.vu.nl/en/international-relations/savusa/desmond-tutu-programme/dtp-chairholders/index.asp Please see attached guidelines for further information.
