Vaguely Interested in Doing an Honours in the Study of Islam at UJ? Want to get a taste of things? If you have demonstrated an interest in the Study of Islam Honours Programme at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) by contacting us or if you are interested in pursuing further studies in the Study of Islam at postgraduate level then this note is for you. The Study of Islam Honours programme provides one of the best academic programmes in Islamic Studies in South Africa. We have a reputation for both quality teaching and academic support which ensures that students obtain a very high quality of tuition, including engaging with world class scholars, and are exposed to both traditional and contemporary issues in Islam. The second semester at UJ has begun and the first class of this semester for the course “Critical Issues in Contemporary Islam” will be on: Johannesburg Date: Tuesday, 13 August 2013 Time: 18h00-20h00 Venue: Religion Studies Seminar Room, A-Ring 6, 6th Floor, Kingsway Campus, University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park Cape Town Date: Friday, 16 August 2013, Time: 18h00-20h00 Venue: Community Development Resource Center, 54 Francis Street, Woodstock, You are most welcome and encouraged to attend the first class and experience what the Study of Islam Honours programme has to offer. If you are seriously considering applying for the Honours programme you are also encouraged to sit in and audit the class for the entire semester. This will entail attending the weekly evening lectures, doing the readings for each class and submitting the writing assignments. In short, you will be treated as a normal student. By the end of the semester you will have a good idea of the programme and you will also be in better position to complete the Recognition of Prior Learning Exam if you do not have an undergraduate degree in Islamic Studies or a related field. The advantage is that if you have performed satisfactorily during the semester, you will be credited for the module if you do go ahead and register in 2014. This means you will have one less module to complete next year. The upcoming module deals with Critical Issues in Contemporary Islam focusing on the Qur’an and Socio-Economic Justice and will be taught by myself – both in Johannesburg and in Cape Town. In Cape Town, I will be assisted by Dr Zahra McDonald. (The two modules that were offered and completed this year were on the Hadith and the Islamic Spiritual Tradition. The modules for next year will deal with the Qur’an, The Shar’iah in a Constitutional Democracy and on Islam and Gender). If you find this offer intriguing please do send me an email at [email protected] informing me of your intention to attend the first class and take up this offer. Do also say something about yourself and your background. If you have a CV, then it is even better. We look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Prof Farid Esack
