Vain Repetition = Religion by Bishop Keith A. Butler ...for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Matthew 6:7b Note what else the Lord Jesus said about those that pray with vain repetition: This kind of thinking is the basis of religion. Religion says that this is how you do something, again and again. In the church I grew up in as a boy, the choir would process down the middle aisle singing, We are soldiers, then take their places up front. Every week, we would start the service the same way: by singing what is known as the Lords Prayer: Our Father, which art in heaven.... That wasnt effectual, fervent prayer-that was religion (see James 5:17)! That was vain repetition! A fervent prayer comes from the heart. It is something you care about, not just something you do as a mental exercise. Much speaking is not measured by how long you pray; it is measured by what you pray and how sharply you pray it.
