Vale, Seniors of 2014 This week is one full of high, and no doubt mixed, emotions for our departing Year 12s. Last night, they attended their final speech night, this evening they will attend their valedictory ceremony, and tomorrow will be their farewell chapel service, and that very defining final moment of their schooling: the traditional hat throw in the quadrangle. Fifty years ago, the emotions tied in with leaving school were the same as they are for our seniors today. In the following extracts from her essay in the 1964 Moretonian, Jan Binnie writes about the last day of school: School Days Are Over With the close of yet another school year, comes the atmosphere of excitement mingled with frayed and fraying tempers. For the majority of the Juniors, Speech Day means the end of their school days, and also the end of firm friendships made while at school. Weeks beforehand everyone talked of what she would be doing that time in so many weeks, and now that Speech Day is here once more, that excitement rises to a climax. All the cupboards, lockers, and shelves look extremely bare without the usual disorder in them, and it is hazardous to try to walk around dormitories, as there are ports piled high everywhere, and the usual “bits and pieces”, that one somehow seems to acquire at boarding-school. Saying goodbye to friends is tearful when you realise that they will remain your best friends (in most cases), even though you will make many other friends in your journey through life.
