Van Halen Part 1: The David Lee Roth years. The tape that wore - TopicsExpress

Van Halen Part 1: The David Lee Roth years. The tape that wore out my old Panasonic Walkman knockoff was Van Halens 1984. I loved their use of synthesizer. No one had a cutting edge sound like they did at the time. The album cover was totally badass--a cherub smoking candy cigarettes. I could listen to everything on the album, from the overplayed Jump to House Of Pain. As I got older, I worked my way backward through the albums I hadnt heard. Their sound always presented fantastic guitar work (Eddie Van Halens Eruption is arguably the best guitar solo of all time) and I grew to like the harder edged punk sound of their early albums. Their rock star status was legendary with the No Brown M&Ms clause they put in their contract with promoters. They would request M&Ms be supplied backstage. If any were brown, they could cancel at the promoters expense. It made them look rebellious, but it served the purpose of making sure the promoter had carefully attended to all the details of the contract. If they found brown M&Ms, the band would immediately check every aspect of the stage setup and equipment to make sure it was safe and what they specified. If it wasnt, they would walk. If it was, theyd play, but David Lee Roth would destroy the dressing room. I can name a slew of songs Id put in the running for my favorite by Van Halen. Among those is Atomic Punk, which shows off their Rock and Punk aspects. Its post apocalyptic sound feels like it should be the soundtrack for a film thats a cross between Mad Max and The Warriors. https://youtube/watch?v=4_qwtPLiy6o
