Van Halen began their career in 1972 and had immediate success - TopicsExpress

Van Halen began their career in 1972 and had immediate success with 11 top 100 hit songs between 72 and 83. Yet in that 11 year span they never had a number one hit song! Then came 1984 and Eddie Van Halen wrote the music to jump, and his record company execs liked it so much, they wanted an album based around the instrumental he had completed before the lyrics were even written. David Lee Roth wrote the lyrics in the back seat of his convertible one afternoon and the song began to come together. On the final version you hear on the radio today, Eddie Van Halen jokes about his guitar solo saying... Thats my favorite guitar solo I never wrote... due to the fact that the sound engineer and producer took two seperate and different takes of the guitar solo and spliced them together. Whatever works. .. the song began at number 47 and shot straight to number 1. Ultimately the new use of synthesizers in the band and on this album was one of the reasons that Roth left the band after this album as he wanted to stick to their root hard rock sound.
