Van Helsing (2004) was made for jerks like me. My childhood was filled with kids books about monsters, seeing old Hammer horror films on TV, comics like The Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf by Night, shows like Tales from the Darkside and endless reruns of The TWilight Zone, reading encyclopedia entries concerning myths and superstition, and of course a near life-long love of movies in general, plus play with toys and dressed up and deep in the woods centering around grim and perilous action with imagined deeply graphic violence, a love of like play academically graduated to role-playing games of forbidding and baleful action and adventure. It is due to these things and more that even after almost a decade this simple, little film still gives me a great big, dumb and loving smile across my face for the whole running time.
