Van Oudenhoven wins as Schultz settles for second again By Tom Goff FRRC/WIR Media Director BUCHANAN – One of these weeks, Maxwell Schultz is going to win a super late model feature at Wisconsin International Raceway. And when he does, Jeff Van Oudenhoven is going to be the first to congratulate him. For the third time this season and second in as many weeks, Schultz saw a lead evaporate as Van Oudenhoven passed him on lap 19 on his way to his third 35-lap Fox River Racing Club feature victory in the last five weeks on Thursday before 2,000 fans on Paper Converting Machine Company (PCMC) of Green Bay night. “Max is going to win these races and I always said to him once you win one, they seem to come a little easier,” said Van Oudenhoven of Kimberly, who increased his point lead over Terry Baldry to 33 points (532 to 499) with the victory. Van Oudenhoven and Schultz are good friends, they pit next to each other and both have cars with Racetech chassis. But Schultz knew that he was in trouble when the No. 45 Ford Fusion of Van Oudenhoven began to fill up his rear view mirror. “Yeah, I knew he was back there and I was hoping he’d stay behind the 91 (Ty Majeski) a little longer and we could get out (to a bigger lead), but that car’s just a rocketship and Jeff’s a good driver and he’s got a lap of laps here,” said the second-generation Reedsville driver, who finished third last week to Lowell Bennett, when Bennett had all he could do to control his car on the last lap, forcing Schultz to back off when he attempted to pass. Schultz also finished second to Van Oudenhoven in the Red Race on June 13. “I’m disappointed with second, but it’s better than a lot of other people had tonight, so it’s a Catch 22. You want to win, but you’ve got to be happy because we’re running in the top five every week,” said Schultz, who jumped from fifth to third in the points with 482, one more than Tom Gee Jr. Meanwhile, Van Oudenhoven gets stronger and stronger each week, which is bad news for everybody else. “We had a real good car tonight,” said Van Oudenhoven. “We weren’t that good the last couple of weeks, and we changed some pieces in the back that tried to give us more adjustments on different things and the car is back to where it was the track conditions change and we have to keep chasing this racetrack and today we hit it on the head.” Van Oudenhoven edged Schultz by 1.258 seconds, while Tim Rothe was third, Ty Majeski foruth and last week’s winner, Lowell Bennett, was fifth. Late model A week’s worth of hard work paid off for Mike Meyerhofer Jr., who rebounded from a bad wreck last week to win the 20-lap late model feature. Meyerhofer of Hilbert, who saw his point lead dwindle to just five over Brent Strelka last week when he placed 16th in the 17-car field last week, passed Brett Wenzel coming out of the second turn on the last lap to earn his second feature win of the season. “Last week after the wreck, we bent the stub and found water in the engine, so we pulled the engine out Thursday night,” said Meyerhofer. “The car was at the chassis builders on Friday morning and then we spend the entire weekend except for Sunday, working on it, so everything paid off.” Meyerhofer made a winning pass on the outside coming out of turn two and won by a half-car length over Wenzel, with Alex Stumpf finishing third, Brent Strelka fourth and last week’s winner Tim Springstroh rounding out the top five. “He kind of roughed me up a little bit, so I returned the favor,” the Hilbert driver said. “We both kept it straight, so it had to be quite the exciting race to watch.” Wisconsin sport trucks Matt Rohde of Menasha took the lead on lap 14 when the trucks of Bryan Monday and Todd Kostichka got together in turn two while battling for the lead en route to his first 20-lap Wisconsin sport truck victory. Rohde finished 1.26 seconds ahead of Brett Van Horn, while Jacob Boldig took third. Super stocks: Two Rivers’ Erik Turner grabbed the lead on lap 15 and held on during two late restarts to win the 20-lap super stock feature, his first of the season. Turner edged Dylan Wenzel by .59 seconds, while Jessie Van Roy placed third, Rick Wenzel was fourth and Neal Sannes fifth. Sizzlin’ 4s Kaukauna’s Roger Braun took family bragging rights by outdueling dad Pat Braun to win his first 15-lap sizzlin’ 4 feature of the season. The two started on the front row and dueled side by side for much of the race. Running the inside groove, Pat led early in the race, but Roger went outside to pass his dad on lap 10 and led the rest of the way. “I can’t believe I could go around the outside like that,” said Roger. “That was way too much fun. One of the funnest races I’ve ever had in my life.” Figure 8 After four seconds and one third, Appleton’s Willy Van Camp finally won his first 15-lap figure 8 race of the season. Van Camp passed Derek Schmitt on lap four led the rest of the way. Terry Van Roy placed second and Jared Baughman was third.
