Vanakkam Everyone! Today begins the annual period dedicated to our departed ancestors, known as Pitru Paksham! During this period it is important to remember our ancestors and do food offerings to them whenever possible. The last day known as Mahalaya Paksham is the most important day. If proper rituals (Tarpanam) are performed on this day, it can compensate for oblations missed during the whole year. This year, Mahalaya Paksham will fall on the 23rd of October. If we delve deep into this ritual, we become aware of its profound aspect. We all believe in Karmam and Punarjanmam(reincarnation). When we pray on this day for all departed ancestors, the benefit of the Pujai goes to the person in which their souls might have re-taken birth in. So, its also a way of praying for others. Our scriptures tell us that when our ancestors are at peace, prosperity and wealth will always abound. Navaratri starts on the next day of Mahalaya Paksham.
