Vancouver, BC October 1, 2014: At today’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Planning, Transportation and Environment, Vancouver City Council unanimously authorized staff to enter into a nominal Lease with Vancouver-based non-profit Kokoro Dance Theatre Society for 7,168 square feet of community amenity space at 111 West Hastings Street and 351 Abbott Street (“Woodwards”) to be shared with Vancouver International Dance Festival Society, Vancouver Moving Theatre Society, and Raven Spirit Dance Society. Kokoro Dance and Vancouver International Dance Festival directors Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi, Vancouver Moving Theatre directors Terry Hunter and Savannah Walling, and Raven Spirit Dance director Michelle Olson are thrilled to have a new home base for their office, rehearsal, and production activities in the Woodward’s Heritage Building. The four societies express gratitude to the City of Vancouver for this historical initiative that will significantly support and enhance their creative artistic activities in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. They will share office space on the 2nd Floor of the Woodward’s Heritage Building and will renovate the former W2 Café and Basement into rehearsal and production spaces that will also be open for use by the arts community at large. Occupancy will begin in January of 2015.
