Vancouver Island Universitys (VIU) Status of Women Committee and the Faculty of International Education invite you...... to participate in a free International Womens Day event by joining several young women who are international students at VIU from India, Nigeria, and the Middle East as they share a 45-minute panel and Q&A in the lecture hall 203 in bldg 355. Join us Friday March 7, 2014 10am-12 pm VIU bldg 355 Rm 203/211 for International Womens Day Panel and Reception Refreshments will be served 11-12 in the lounge (211) across the hall after the presentation. Hope to see you there to celebrate the strides women have made in these countries and the work still to be done with our sisters from around the world! Panelists: Olamide Akinola is currently enrolled in the MBA/MSc IB program at Vancouver Island University and is a BSc. Economics graduate from Covenant University in Nigeria. She is passionate about community development and has volunteered in several capacities to implement numerous charity projects back in Nigeria. Manushi Bishnoi is from India, born and raised in New Delhi. She is pursuing a Masters in Educational Leadership and is a peer coach at VIU. She volunteers for two organizations that are learner centered. As a volunteer, she has also helped in raising awareness about homeless and helpless people in Canada. International Womens Day has been observed since 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. In 1911 more than a million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for womens rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office, and to end discrimination. This year also saw womens Bread and Roses campaign. Russian women observed their first International Womens Day March 8 1914 and it has remained the global date ever since. 1975 was designated International Womens Year by the United Nations. IWD is now an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia and for women only in China, Madagascar and Nepal. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, with flowers and small gifts. In some countries, IWD is the equivalent of Mothers Day, where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. March is Womens History Month in the US.
