Vanessas Random Thoughts by Vanessa Cwikla I hope everyone had a safe and festive holiday weekend. I took the kidlings to my parents for a cookout and a little socialization. I hadnt been there all summer. I would feel on the neglectful side but I call my parents three or four times a week so I think we are good. ******* The ice bucket challenge for ALS is going strong. Whoever decided this would be a good way to raise money for a cure is a genius. Of course, some people take it to the non-genius level. A firefighter who flies the planes to drop water on forest fires and his friend decided to do the ultimate ice bucket challenge. The guy dumped 400 gallons of ice water on his friend. Oh, my goodness gracious. What an idiot. The receiver of the water is in serious but stable condition. Evidently that amount of water getting dumped on the human body is dangerous. Can any of you say duh? Where was this guy trained? I thought the fire department went through rigorous training and had to know all kinds of interesting things like that. Lets figure it out. If a gallon of water weighs approximately eight pounds and you have 400 gallons that would be 3,200 pounds of water. How did they not realize that this was just stupid? ******* Road construction seems to be the word no matter where I need to go. Highway 64 is torn up in a variety of places between DD and Medford. It may be torn up going towards Thorp, but I cannot verify that since I generally dont take 64 that direction. Anyway, I was coming around the curves where 64 and O meet and life is good. Coming to the second curve there was nothing and then BAM there it is. No signs. Thank goodness I had just replaced my brakes. If you are going to travel in the Medford direction I highly recommend going on O or even going down to 29 and coming up on 13. ******* On Thursday evening, we ventured out and about to the Thirsty Squirrel to enjoy the Packer game on Kellies 120-inch television. I have found that the bigger the screen the more fun it is. Plus we all know that her food is awesome! I so love her pulled pork that I am having my daughters baby shower in the banquet hall just so she could make me some. The fact that I dont have to cook or clean up is just a bonus. Did you all know that if you have less than 50 people the hall is free? You just have to pay for the catering! Double bonus!! ******* I cannot tell you how bummed I was that it rained Friday night for football. I checked the radar frequently because I refuse to go out and sit in the rain. It looked like it was going to clear up by game time. So disappointing. I think I was destined to be damp. Since it rains constantly, I fully expect to find us all to develop gills just like in the movie Waterworld. I have totally given up hanging clothes out on the line. If it’s not raining, it is so humid nothing dries anyway. ******* We have started throwing in wood for winter. Rumor has it that this winter is supposed to make last winter look like a cake walk. Yippee. Those of you who use wood as a heat source should get your wood made and stacked. Those of you with an alternative heat source like LP or fuel oil should look into signing a contract to keep the costs down. Last year, my mother was only paying $1.79 when prices were skyrocketing because she signed a contract. Make sure you read them also. If it says they can cancel at anytime it isnt a contract. It is a false sense of security for people who cant afford to pay unjustifiable cost hikes. That is just my opinion though. It doesnt count for much. ******* I hope everyone has a great first week of school. Not just the students and teachers, but the mommies and daddies out there who are sending their poor babies off for the first time or full time. That can be rough. I, however, am doing it for the sixth time and dont feel all that bad about it anymore. I am sure I will miss them, but at the same time I just keep thinking about how much less housework I will be doing. And lunches I dont have to make. I hate to cook. And less fighting...I could make a list that goes on and on. Unfortunately, the paper doesnt have that kind of space.
