Vanity Card #034: Unless its a comic book hero, or a story - TopicsExpress

Vanity Card #034: Unless its a comic book hero, or a story about civil rights, movies nowadays are beginning to suck! All these new movies just look like they are going for Oscar material. Or if it doesnt have the story, maybe they can make it up with special effects. Granted, there are good movies out there now, but there was a time where movies were way different. I was browsing through my massive dvd/blu-ray collection and noticed something. There were a LOT of really, GREAT movies made in the 90s and 00s that didnt need any of that crap. Movies like Speed, Multipicity, The Nutty Professor, Commando, etc. Just movies made for entertainment. Lets use Speed as an example. Its an action suspense movie at its core. Very simple concept, a bus needs to stay above 50 mph (in LA!) or the bus will blow up. Thats it. The rest of the movie is spent figuring out how to save the people on the bus. Theres a lot of tense moments that keep you interested and the movie is great! The actors are not amazing. Jeff Daniels, fresh out of Dumb & Dumber is taking a break from comedy. Dennis Hopper being type cast as the crazy man. And Keanu Reeves doing the same old surfer boy from Bill and Ted. But these guys made the movie happen! And lets not forget Sandra Bullock! This movie made us notice Sandra Bullock! But still... if they tried to make Speed TODAY, there would be some elemental plot twist in the story or the bus would be CGI. Something would happen to make this movie less RAW. Simple movies made for great entertainment. You didnt need to pretend to be intellectual, you were just along for the ride. They werent trying to break new grounds or reinvent the wheel. They just made an entertaining movie.
