Various aspect of Horticulture development demostrated at Namsai NAMSAI, Feb 08: The three-day international seminar on the theme ‘Economic prosperity & nutritional security in Northeastern hill regions through horticulture’ organized by the Arunachal University of Studies (AUS) here in Lohit district was concluded on Friday. During the preceding three-day training session for the stakeholders of Namsai and other regions, demonstrations on various aspects of horticulture development were presented by experts including AUS’ agriculture and horticulture faculty dean Prof RK Pathak, German expert Dr Ulrich Berk, and Dr A Thimmaiah of the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority. Apart from demonstrating the techniques of organic farming, the experts informed the participants of ways to harness cosmic energy and the energy mediated through soil and cow in agriculture. Approximately 550 participants, including GBs, panchayat leaders and others benefited from the programme. Among other things, the participants were informed about the relevance of organic production of fruits, vegetables, cereals, etc and familiarized with the certification process and the relevance of domestic and export markets. AUS vice chancellor Prof GN Pandey said the event was an initiative of the university to channelize the potential of the area and the state in the right direction, adding that it is time to freshly address the parameters of the agriculture sector as the nation will not enjoy its supremacy and self-reliance in production of cereals, given the estimated population growth. The way forward, he said, is to practice sustainable organic farming, which would reduce dependency on chemicals in agriculture and horticulture. DC Rajiv Takuk and EACs HN Dubey and S Sengupta also spoke.
