Varudabishegam .... Mother Kali is one lovely lady who loves to dance and dance….. With such being her nature, priests long ago made a promise to her, they told her this, dear Mother KALI, we know that you love to dance as you are the great dancer in Siva Lokam, but this is earth dear Mother, we are not able to pray in peace if you are going to dance all day long…. In a year, we will select an auspicious day, in which, on that day, you may dance to your heart’s contentment and none will stop you or say anything… The day is known as the Varudabishegam, or the annual festival day of the year, on this day, devotees will pierce themselves, and carry kavadis of various kinds, from thee chattis, karagams, mulle, vette mulles and the list goes on and on…. Mother seemed happy with what priests of long ago had offered her and it looks like both have reached a mutual agreement…. On the day of the annual thiruvilla, Mother KALI dances to her excitement, often, this is when we see her aggressive side, with her eating lime and smearing sindhoor all over her body….. But, when the festival is over, Mother KALI tones down and appears with less aggression… Commonly, this is when they will place on a pon unjal (swing), and sing lullabies to her as to tone her down completely….. Others will opt to bring her on a chariot. By bringing her on a grand chariot, she will be able to visit all those who longed to get a glimpse of her, especially those who are not able to step in to her temple for poojas… Mother KALI will personally stop at their door steps and blesses such people, usually the aged and crippled…..
