Varun Dhawan: The next heartthrob of Bollywood Source: movieplus Varun Dhawan made a grand entry in Bollywood with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year. There couldn’t have been a better launchpad than that. Plus alongside him were two other newcomers – Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt – so there was no chance of being overshadowed by an established star. Perfect start Varun made full use of the opportunity presented to him. In the film he showed off his excellent dancing skills and his fun, charming nature. Acting skills? Well that’s a different matter altogether and when has insufficient acting skills come in the way of becoming a heartthrob in Bollywood? He made an impact on the critics as well, with most of them selecting him as the best among the newcomers on show in the film. He looked confident in the film and it didn’t seem like his first film. He was quite good in the comic scenes (so he has inherited the funny bone from his dad) and was decent in the emotional scenes as well. Maybe his stint as an assistant director to Karan Johar on his 2010 film, My Name Is Khan, had something to do with that. The next step Bollywood has many examples of actors who had ‘the prefect start’ but faltered thereafter. Varun needs to ensure that he selects the right films. He wouldn’t want to be typecast like a Shahid Kapoor, who hasn’t really recovered from that yet, or experiment too much like a Hrithik Roshan, who had to work extra hard to get his career back on track, right at the beginning of his Bollywood career. Varun will next be seen in the film, Main Tera Hero. He will once again be playing a musician in this film being directed by his father David Dhawan. Dhawan Sr. must be feeling real good after his last film, Chashme Baddoor, did well at the box-office, but it is baffling to think that Varun agreed to be part of such a film. Main Tera Hero is the remake of the hit Telegu film Kandireega and is being produced by Balaji Motion Pictures. Bollywood is currently witnessing an upsurge in interesting subjects and new filmmakers with a fresh outlook. In such a scenario, Varun selecting this film to be his next might backfire. A prudent choice Saif Ali Khan’s production house, Illuminati Films, is slowly but surely becoming one to be reckoned with. The production house has come to be associated with new-age and interesting films, yet commercially successful. Post Main Tera Hero, Varun will start shooting for Sriram Raghavan’s next film being produced by Illuminati Films (Sriram Raghavan has made films like Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar). This untitled film is supposed to be a murder thriller. This is a great choice for Varun, if the script is good, as it will be in stark contrast to his chocolate boy/lover boy image. Varun in Karan’s next The best news for Varun is that Karan Johar has selected him to be part of his next film as well. That is almost like an endorsement from Karan. This untitled film will see a new actress cast opposite Varun and new director at the helm. Karan described the film as fun and exciting and has also informed that the script has been finalized. Varun, just like Siddharth and Alia, is part of Dharma Productions and Karan mentors and nurtures him. Not a bad mentor to have, eh? Ask any actor who has been tagged a heartthrob and they will tell you that the only way to make that tag your own is by being part of successful films. Good looks and dancing skills can only sustain you for so long, if your films are not performing at the box-office. Ranbir Kapoor is the best role model for any new actor. Varun will also have tough competition on his hands from the likes of his Student Of The Year co-star Siddharth Malhotra (who will next be seen opposite Parineeti Chopra is Hasee Toh Phasee), Ayushmann Khurrana (Soojit Sircar’s Humara Bajaj is his next film) and Sushant Singh Rajput of Kai Po Che fame (his next film is Suddh Desi Romance opposite Parineeti Chopra once again).
