Vayu Purana Vignettes 8 Rakshasas Lady Khasha Then came Lady Khashaa, wife of Kasyapa. She had two frightening sons, first wanted to eat mother so was called Yaksha, and second protected her so was called Rakshasa! Yaksha was called Guhyaka later on. Kasyapa explained to his wives that son adopts the maternal traits and daughters that of paternal ancestors. Children adopt their mothers in many ways. Aditi is righteous and pious and inherent strength has Devas. Arishta the music lover, Danu like magic and illusiveness, Vinata likes to travel by air, Surabhi likes penance, Kadru has furious temperament and unpleasant conduct tainted by anger, Danayusha has both enmity and blessing. Khasha has furious temperament. Their children reflected it. Vayu Purana goes on great lengths among microscopic animals and creations to insects and Keeta-patangas and all are detailed. Indra’s boons made Yaksha and Rakshasa terrible in their activities. They married Pishacha Aja and Khanda’s daughters Brahmadhana and Jantudhana. Brahmadhana has twins boy Brahmadhana and girl Dhananaa. Jantudhana had a son Yatudhana (Titan of Greek mythology). Yatudhana has 10 sons Heti, Praheti, Ugra, Pauruseya, et all. All ten are among the Yatudhans who work with Arka or Surya their maternal uncle. (These are Titans or some sort of group because the names etymologically repeat in greek texts). Heti the Yatudhana had son Lanku. He earned a boon and city from Vishnu, he called it Lanka. (Thank god, he was named Panku, imagine the Sri Punk-an cricketteam, every time they lose, you punks, or eerytime they win you got punked!). Lanku had several sons including Malyavana and Sumali. Their daughters will marry Vishrwa and form the famous Rakshashas! Praheti had famous son Puloman whose daughter married Indra. Their brother Vadha’s son is Nikumbha who was a ruthless brahmarakshasa. (He later through austerities went higher and higher!) Vata’s son was Viraga and Apa’s son was Jambuka. Vyaghra’s son was Nirananda. They all joined Rakshasas vriti. Brahmadhana had ten sons and their children are Brahmarakshasas, their sisters Raktakarna, Mahajihva, Aksaya, Upaharini’s children formed clans of Brahmarakshasas. They lived in Slesamataka. Yaksha married Apsara Kratusthali and had a great son Nabhi and lived in Nyagrodharohinah. Nabhi or Rajatnabha is grandfather of Guhyakas. He had married daughter of Anuhrada, Lady Bhadra. Her two sons were Manivara and Manibhadra, both were given powers equal to Indra. (They were not Indras, but they are in Tibetan cosmography!) Manibhadra had 24 sons called Punyajanas. Manivara’s are called Devajanyas. Manibhadra and his brood was well handled by Bhima who also killed three more types of Rakshasas inlcuing Maitras and fourth group was Krodhavashas. Later Kasyapa and Khasa had 24 more sons all became Rakshasas except one Akampana who was a Yaksha. Actually most of these, twenty two were Good Rakshasas! It was their seven sisters which caused problems for Devas: Alamba, Utkaca, Krsna, Nirrta, Kapila, Siva, and blessed lady Keshini who was very pious. Alambeyas and Utkaceyas were cruel and were put down by Bhima. Krsneyas and Saiveyas were excellent Rakshsasas. Nirrta married Nrriti who was a Rudra and also a Ganeshvara, thus, his progeny the Nairritas were followers of Siva. They fought on behalf of Pandavas lead by avatar of Nrriti, Ghatotkacha. The eldest son of Nrriti is Virupaksha and many Ganeshvaras were among his sons. These are called Dev Rakshasas. Virupaksha is the jailor of Kauravas in Garwhal Mahabharata where his temples are present. Kumbha the noble souled Daitya married Kapila and her children are called Daityarakshasas. These are also Good guys. Yaksha Kampana born on Keshini the YakshaRakshasas. Alambeyas were lead by Surasika who married his cousin Nila, daughter of pious Kesini and her children were unfortunately evil Nailas. A daughter of Nila, Vikaca married one of sons of Nrriti Nairrta, and had the following sons: Harakas, Bhisakas, Kramakas, Vainakas, Pishachas, Vahakas and Prasakas. These were Bhumirakshass, slow witted but with manly exploits and little evil in their minds but easily manipulated. They serve Siva. They are Bhole like their boss Bhole Bhandari. These soon evolved into Khecharas and could travel by air. Yeah, slow witted fast moving low flying Kecharas, they were the drones of the Epic Age! Thus, these eight Rakshasa clans and their mothers are famous. Bhadrakas rakshasas are born of Yajna, while Putana’s children are Bhutas. Other Rakshasa groups are Agastya Rakshasas, descended from Agastya. Visvamitras, descended from Visvamitra. And finally most famous, Paulastyas, descended from Pulastya. (Link: To be added) Kubera is king of Agastyas and Paulastyas rakshashas. MAN or ELEPHANT! Then Kasyapa married Krodha. He had twelve daughters, they all married Pulaha. That included Surasa mother of Serpents. One of the twelve is Iravati. And her progeny almost bumped us off as the chosen progeny for the Devas. We are manavas, humans, descended from Manu himself. But, we were almost replaced by another group. Sons of Ira. Bhauvana who was Vishwakarma took skulls of two Suryas. He then used the rathantara hymn on those skills, from the Sama veda hymn was born Airavata, son of Ira. Lustre of pure cloud, born of water, power of Surya, He has four sons Anjana, Supratika, Vamana and Padma from his wife Abhramu. Another daughter of Krodha, Sveta had 4 sons, the elephants of 4 quarters. One of them‘s sons Anjana is the vehicle of yama. Another is Supratika, the ride of Varuna and given to Bhagadatta in war. Padma is the ride of Ailavila Kubera. Vamana is ride of Agni. They are born of daughters of Devas, danavas, Ayu the king, Gandharvas, Pishachas, rakshasas, Uragas who chose them in preference to the humans. Elephants and their progeny was smarter, powerful, fierce, more endurance and more loyal. Suddenly, devas have the perfect race for themselves. Why waste energies on the puny humans and their treacherous ways, they have the alternate available, ready and willing. An elephant is called • Dvirada for two tusks • Hastina for trunk • Karin for hand like trunk • Varana for it protects • Dantin for Dantas • Gaja for his Garjanata • Kunjara for seeing above hedges Kunjas • Naag for fighting Trees or mountains aka nagas • Born of matanga hence Maatanga. • Dvipa for drinking through two days • Saamaja for Airavata was born via Samaveda hymn Suddenly, the elephants threatened the existence of humans or humans will end up as servants for the Elephants. Even Ayu ‘s daughter married a mahadiggaja and had Anjana and Saman, luster of lotuses and stout hearts and bodies. Chandrama even married Saman and had Mahapadma and Urmimalin. Whole family of Airavata and several generations is described. Ira had three daughters as well Lata, Valli and Virudha. Lata gave birth to all vanaspatis and then Vrakshas. Valli to grasses, hedges, bamboos. Virudhas to creepers. Aditi was righteous, pious, Diti was strong minded, Surabhi focused on penance, Danu on Deceit, Kadru was ruthless, Kraunchi was disposed to learn and Ira for receptive capacity. Danayu was interested in food. Vinata could bear burdens, Tamra liked to make strings, thus, the natures of mothers of world are described. Aditi and Ira got along and Mankind was in peril. Gajas helped Devas win wars against Asuras. But, the progeny of Ira covered the earth and fed its denizens. The Gajas decided to be supporters rather than the rulers of Earth. The four or eight of them take their place bearing Earth. And this sacrifice of Gajas for humans is remembered by worshipping the elephant faced God before beginning all tasks and endeavours. And to make sure the Elephants don’t speak, do not realize their full potential, and their strength, Curses of Agni, Svyambhavu and Sura were put in place to stop their full potential. So, don’t forget Colonel Haathi could really have been leading the army of this nation but for a decision by Gods to stick to the flawed creation of theirs. And some of these ungrateful people think we should not worship these gods. Send them to clean Elephant stables.
