Giustino is a 1724 opera by Vivaldi to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan. The opera was composed for the 1724 carnival season in Rome and premiered at the Teatro Capranica. Of course, probably because in Rome women could not at that time tread the boards of the Opera theaters, the cast available to Vivaldi was an all male cast: six sopranos and altos castrati, castrated singers - among them the famous Farfallino in the role of Arianna, Empress of Byzantium - and three tenors. The castrato Giovanni Ossi, who played the role of Anastasius, Emperor of Byzantium, had an acute alto extension, but in Rome his roles were always written in key of soprano.
