VeeNess Rescu at Pilliga Forest Options for this story The Pilliga Forest is a precious jewel in the heart of NSW crown of natural beauty. The Pilliga is a vital recharge area for the Great Artesian Basin, replenishing our aquifers. Coal seam gas drilling will put those precious water resources at risk. The largest and most intact temperate woodland in eastern Australia, it is a national icon, with outstanding conservation and recreational values. Gas operations in the Pilliga will severely increase fire risks and real questions should be asked about its placement in such a fire prone area. Coal seam gas production will clear at least 2,400 hectares of native vegetation and threaten the future of nationally important wildlife such as the Pilliga Mouse and South-eastern Long-eared Bat, and this area is well known as koala habitat. The coal seam gas production plans to extend into the Pilliga East State Conservation Area which is a protected area under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.
