Vega Tire Sprint Series at Atlanta Motorsports Park Race #5 - TopicsExpress

Vega Tire Sprint Series at Atlanta Motorsports Park Race #5 report The fifth round of the Vega Tire Sprint Series took place Saturday, July 13th at the .85 mile challenging Atlanta Motorsports Park kart track in Dawsonville, GA. Jim Fry, TS Racing Atlanta race director greeted the race participants in the morning driver’s meeting with the exciting news of the recently announced first annual $12,000 Vega Sprint Nationals to be held at AMP the weekend of October 4–6 and the news that since the last race, improvements continue at AMP including the successful re-paving of the ‘dip’. The racing started with two rounds of practice and qualifying was completed before the lunch break. The ‘dip’ received rave reviews and the track was fast as proven by Canton, GA’s Michael Bilyy with a new track record of 52.66 seconds in Tag Junior. After lunch the 10 lap pre-final races lined up the competitors for the 15 lap final races. KID KARTS The first event was Kid Karts with our four future F1 stars (Brayden Huguenard, Jack O’Brien, Vincent Cortililo and Tanner Carter) putting on a great show for the fans. TAG JUNIOR Next up was the final race for the Tag Juniors for 15 grueling laps around the hilly AMP course. Michael Bilyy again broke his track record with a scalding lap of 52.245 seconds on his way to his second victory at AMP in only two tries. Damon Steele maintained his season points lead with a solid second place finish and Willis Woerheide broke in his new ride with a third place finish. TAG SENIOR Sixteen karts made up the field for the Tag Senior race. This class continues to be the most hotly contested group at AMP. Alex Sala has maintained the points lead all season, but a 13th place finish in the 10 lap pre-final proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome and in the end it was Joseph Buffa moving into the points lead with his 3rd victory of the season in only four tries. Joseph had a race long battle with Danny Kaye, finally beating him to the checkers by the scant margin of .7 of a second. Lee Johnson and Justin Garrison followed closely in 3rd and 4th. Alex Sala recovered from his disappointing pre-final to finish 5th with Jose Garcia falling to 6th from a late race spin after battling for the lead early in the race with his new ride. So Buffa now leads Sala by 55 points with Johnson, Garrison and Kaye still in the season long hunt. CADET / YAMAHA SPORTSMAN Willis Woerheide solidified his points lead with his 2nd win of the season over a hard charging Enzo Espinosa in 2nd and Austin Huguenard in 3rd. CJ Van Heusden proved he will be a threat in this class in the future with his strong performance after recently moving to GA from California. Unfortunately the race was cut short of the full distance after Espinosa and Huguenard tangled. Thankfully both drivers were checked out OK. SHIFTER Our final race of the day was the shifter class. After 15 laps it was David Weber in first for his 3rd win of the season. The win gave Weber enough points to put him back ahead of his teammate James Hurley by 25 points in their season long battle. Jeff Price finished 2nd for the second time this season with Hurley in 3rd and Tennessee newcomer Jason Brown came home 4th. Erik Penz put on a strong exhibition with his 250cc shifter setting a new outright track record of 50.342 seconds! NEXT RACE The next race in the Vega Tire Sprint Race Series is Saturday, August 10th.
