Veganism is based on a premise I reject: that we should not eat animals because they are like us, but have at plants because they are other and not like us. The notion that animals have feelings but plants dont is behind it. On what basis do people presume to infallibly detect the presence of intentional beings? I assume every living thing is conscious, including plants. This is the position of ascetics who practice xerophagy, only eating parts of the plant that do not kill it, nuts, fruits, and leaves. The naive stance is to assume that only humans are worthy of the consideration owed to fellow intentional beings. Once one accepts the error of this as simply a lower level psychopathy where one can treat the other with no consideration of its potential suffering, then what to do? Almost everything you eat is the result of suffering. Thats why we invented animal sacrifice to atone for our need as mammals to kill to live.
