Ventured out to the grocery store today in advance of the predicted white fluffy armageddon, to top off our zombocalypse supply cache. The shelves were bare in a way that you only see in the midwest in advance of winter weather, or perhaps the old Soviet Union. However, there were lessons to be learned. Apparently healthy food is not at all useful for waiting out a potential week-long power outage. Anything remotely good for you was still there in abundance, even if it did have foot and hoof prints clearly visible in the packaging. The chips, cookies, and crisps, though, were completely obliterated. This was very disappointing to me.. because of course I was there primarily for chips, cookies and crisps. The main lesson to be learned, though, was market research by the vendors themselves. Take all the surveys you want, but there is no better barometer for the popularity of your product than a stampede of unprepared, overweight midwesterners panicked by a weather forecast. I watched six different families approach the chip aisle like game show contestants trying to catch flying cash in a phone booth. All were dismayed by the empty shelves where the Doritos used to be, and all were elated to see what they thought were the two overlooked bags on a high shelf, only to pick them up, discover they were one of the new niche flavors, and then toss them back in disgust. Apparently when the world is potentially ending tomorrow, Cajun squirrel, grilled cheese and ketchup, and maple moose potato chips STILL arent worth buying.
