Vera Brittains brother Edward in one of his last letters to her - TopicsExpress

Vera Brittains brother Edward in one of his last letters to her before he was killed described a truce. The trenches were very close and between the two sides they had agreed not to shoot to kill when either side went out to mend the wire. They fired over the heads. For a period of time no one on either side in that stretch of trench was killed or wounded. The officers turned a blind eye. Then the commanding officer was transfered, they got a new commander, the NCOs znd remaining officers explained the arrangement to the new commander who threatened to have them shot of they didnt give up this practice and re-instate shoot to kill. So they did. And within a month most of them were dead. Even though there was no major offensive happening at that part of the line. Merry Christmas indeed.
