Vera Mae Ellerman Rodecap Hurst, 79, Atchison, passed away at her home July, 15.2013. She was born June 21.1934 on the family farm two miles west of Nortonville. Memorial service will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 18, 2013 at First Christian Church, Atchison, KS with Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial will follow at Nortonville Cemetery, Nortonville, KS, with Rev. Bob Carter officiating. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday July 17, 2013 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Nortonville Christian Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at beckerdyer. She was the second daughter born to Raymond Otis Ellerman and Clara May Higley Ellerman. Vera attended Atchison County Community High School graduating in 1951 at the age of 16. She attended Highland Junior College, received her Bachelor’s degree from Benedictine College and her masters plus from the University of Kansas. She had many hobbies. She liked to paint, write and spend time at her cabin which was built by her son, Rocky. She was very interested in one room schools, writing books and giving presentations to students and many organizations. This is where her lifelong love of being an educator started. She taught at Sugar Bowl, Nortonville, Atchison and Auburn Washburn in Topeka. She taught children with special needs helping them to unlock their potential. She retired in 1994. Vera was member of Farmerette FCE, Retired Teachers, Project Concern, Friends of the Library, Historical Society, Geneology Association of Atchison and sat on numerous boards. Survivors are her husband, Van Hurst of the home, two daughters, Jerri (Tim) Freed, Topeka, Lisa (Dave) Hill, Tyler, Texas and one son, Roger (Rocky) Rodecap II, Cummings. Two sisters: Bertha Potts, Nortonville and Esther Willis, Effingham, twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ruth Ireland.
