"Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He is anxious over you; for the believers and is full of pity, kind, and merciful” Quran Chapter 9: The Repentance, verse 128. The Prophet (peace be upon him) cared deeply for his Ummah and was concerned for the everlasting welfare of his followers. He would be anguished and distressed as he wept with tears flowing down his blessed face. “O Allah! My Ummah! My Ummah!” Such was his worry for the nation that his beard would become soaked whilst crying for us. Such was his worry that he would make Dua for us at least 5 times a day. Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Once, when I saw the Prophet in a good mood, I said to him: “O Messenger of Allah! Supplicate to Allah for me!” So, he (peace be upon him) said: “O Allah! Forgive Aisha her past and future sins, what she has hidden, as well as what she has made apparent.” So, I began smiling, to the point that my head fell into my lap out of joy. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: “Does my supplication make you happy?” I replied: “And how can your supplication not make me happy?” He then said: “By Allah, it is the supplication that I make for my Ummah in every prayer.” We spend our nights with our families/friends, socialising, relaxing, and enjoying ourselves. We spend our nights occupying ourselves with what pleases/concerns us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) spent his nights worrying and praying for his Ummah! Tears would fill his eyes in Sujood and he would stay in this position all night. Even on the Day of Judgment he will be worried much about his Ummah. The day every person will run as far away as possible from their beloveds and in fear they may ask for their good deeds. When people will be pleading with the Prophets of their time to intercede for them yet those Prophets will be worried only about themselves. On that day our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will still be concerned about his Ummah. He had not seen us, he did not know us, he did not even know of us, yet if we could see the tears flow out of his beloved eyes for our wellbeing and concern, only then would we will realize the love he had for us. We should be proud to be a Muslim and honoured to be a part of his Ummah. But then why is it that the very same Ummah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) so deeply loved, the same Ummah that he spent his nights worrying and praying for, the same Ummah he took physical and verbal abuse continuously for, the same Ummah he prayed for in Sujood – that very same Ummah we neglect every single day. The Ummah screams for our help and we are not even aware of their plight. Why are we not hurting when we see graveyards in Palestine full of graves of babies? Why do our hearts not bleed when we see our innocent brothers and sisters brutally tortured and murdered in Syria? Why do we not cry in agony when we see multitudes of graves dug for our brothers in Iraq? Why do we not rush in defence of our Rohingya brothers and sisters being set alight? The Ummah is forced to watch as their husbands and brothers are locked away never to be seen again! The Ummah is massacred across all borders; humiliated, tortured, raped, forced out of their homes and we look the other way. How did we get to this point?! Why did and why do we allow this to happen? Where has the love, the concern, the compassion, the ‘wanting’ to protect human life gone? Do we even think about our suffering brothers and sisters? Do we remember to pray for them? Or do we just feel sorry for them and disregard them? Have our hearts hardened so much so, that we have become immune to the afflictions upon our brothers and sisters? We have all heard the Hadith “None of you can truly be said to believe until he wants for his brother what he wants for himself.” Watching the suffering of the beloved Ummah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with no action being taken to put an end to it - is this truly what we want for ourselves? Would we be pleased if the majority turned away from us simply because they are too lazy, passive or selfish? Would we be content with only a handful of Muslims that come to our defence in our times of need? The delinquency is that we have become content with practicing parts of the Religion; so we pray, we fast, we wear hijab or have a beard and we think this is sufficient. We go Jumuah prayers and attend a few Islamic conceptual talks and we limit our religion to this. We don’t smoke, drink, eat pork, go clubbing and we think we are decent Muslims. But we are not supposed to be doing these deeds in the first place! Just as we are not supposed to be sitting like statues whilst the Ummah is being slaughtered, just as we are not supposed to be sitting in hope that Imam Mehdi will come and do our job for us on our behalf, just as we are not supposed to be watching from the side-lines as our religion and honour of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Ummah is torn to shreds, just as we are not supposed to be concerned with ONLY our own lives and families and forget the other part of the body that the Prophet (peace be upon him) described as one Ummah. We must rebuild that same love the Prophet (peace be upon him) had for people despite him never having met them, the same love he had for people of different races, nationalities, colours who had not been born yet, the same concern that made him weep in distress and turmoil over our well-being. The same love he had for us; so much so that God mentions his grief for the Ummah in the Quran! Brothers and sisters; do not worry if people oppose you for defending the oppressed Ummah, do not worry of the opinion of others when you speak about the atrocities inflicted upon our people, but be concerned, be worried if God is displeased with you. Defending the oppressed, helping the helpless, being a voice for the voiceless is not an option in Islam, it is an obligation; it is a right that the oppressed have over us.
