Verily to Allah we belong and to Him we return. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Shaykh Aḥmad bin `Abdullāh al-Dūghān. He passed away on Saturday 14th Dhu’l-Ḥijjah 1434/ 19th October 2013 in his home town of al-Kūt in the region al-Aḥsā’, in the East of Saudi Arabia at the age of 102. Shaykh Aḥmad, a descendant of the great Companion, Khālid bin al-Walīd, was born in al-Aḥsā’ in the year 1332 and became the greatest scholar in a region known for traditional knowledge. He received ijāzah from Shaykh Yā Sīn al-Fādānī, Shaykh `Abd alFat Joetāḥ Abu’l-Ghuddah and Shaykh `Abdullah Sirāj al-Dīn, may Allah have mercy upon them all. There was only one man in his chain of connection between him and Shaykh al-Islām, Sayyid Aḥmad bin Zaynī Daḥlān. He was known for his scrupulousness and non-attachment to worldly things. All his words and deeds were in accordance with the Sunnah. He would not say anything bad about anyone but rather his tongue would constantly be moist with the remembrance of Allah. Sayyidī al-Ḥabīb `Umar bin Ḥafīẓ (may Allāh preserve him and benefit us by him) described him as possessing knowledge combined with action, remembrance of Allah and fear of Him. He was the authority that people in the region relied upon for fatwā in the Shāfi`ī school. He helped promote a return to true scholarship based on the four Sunni schools of law in a region which had suffered from abandoning this approach. His death is a great loss to the region and to the Ummah. May Allah raise him to the highest of stations. May Allah bless his children and students and allow them to continue Shaykh Aḥmad’s work.
