Vermont is a beautiful place to show off to out-of-town friends and family. Please be safe while enjoying the backcountry in winter and keep these tips in mind: (Photo, Camels Hump summit by Jerry Lasky) →The Mountain Point Forecast is a great resource to learn current weather conditions on summits: weather.gov/btv/mountain. →Please make sure you are properly prepared for sudden changes in weather at all times but especially when climbing in elevation. →Remember, Long Trail blazes are white and snow-covered trees can obscure blaze visibility. Since the recent ice storm a lot of trees have fallen across trails making route finding even more difficult. →Stay alert when going around downed trees to make sure you have your bearings. This would be a great time to carry and know how to use a compass. →Also, remember that cold temperatures freeze and drain batteries rendering electronic devices and headlamps useless. Keep batteries warm and close to your body until you are ready to use them. And carry extras. →More winter hiking tips from GMC: greenmountainclub.org/page.php?id=61
