Veronica – This Week in History The Milwaukee Journal, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, December 28, 1941 “Female Find of 1941” Veronica Lake at Paramount exemplifies the win or bust idea. When Arthur Hornblow, Jr., shoved her into a flashy part in “I Wanted Wings” last spring, not even the autograph hunters who pounce upon every film familiar would have lifted a pencil at her approach. She had been in three pictures at three other studios, but each time in one of those now you see her, now you don’t roles. Hornblow had never seen her at all on the screen until he gave her a special test. But what with her sheepdog bob, which Paramount shrewdly publicized, and one of those colorful parts that every young actress longs to bite into, Miss Lake got herself a nice place in Hollywood’s big parade almost overnight. Now her studio calls her a star and is backing her with large money. Definitely a find of 1941 is Miss Veronica Lake. She’s the No. 1 pick of her studio among its young lovelies.
