Very Strange!!!! Black- Capped Kingfisher at Singalila National Park, West Bengal. Black- capped kingfisher as we know, is a common species on the coastal waters and especially mangroves. I was really surprised to have a sight of this elegant bird near Trekker’s Hut at Garibas in Singalila National Park, West Bengal at an astonishing altitude of more than 8000ft. This was so unusual that I , kept on observing the bird which was calling from the tree next to which I was standing. When I came back to my senses, I , managed to take some record shots. I took the image at around 6.20 in the morning of 04.10.2014 and saw it till 12.55 in the afternoon. This image is shot in a panoramic mode to include the habitat. After that, I stayed back for two more days at Garibas but never did I sight this bird again. I came to know from the well known birder Biswapriya Rahut that there is a record of Black –capped kingfisher from Jhalong , West Bengal which is about 3000ft. Then I called up famous birder Arka Sarkar who was also surprised to hear about the presence of the bird at such an altitude. I failed to explain myself that what made a coastal and specifically a mangrove one to fly to such an altitude. Is it anything related to their migration? China and Taiwan have some records of seeing it at some moderate altitude but 8000ft is really a thought provoking matter. Experts’ opinions solicited. Thanks a lot friends Megh Roy Choudhury
